Cogmed FAQ's
Cogmed is a cognitive training program designed to strengthen working memory. Working memory is distinct from both long-term and short-term memory. Long-term memory refers to accumulated knowledge and the storage of life events, such as recalling one’s first day of school. Short-term memory, by contrast, involves brief retention of recently attended information, for instance, what one was thinking immediately before beginning to read this passage.
Working memory differs from both. It refers to the temporary holding and active manipulation of information to achieve some purpose or in order to complete a task. This might include solving a mental arithmetic problem, understanding a complex sentence, following multi-step instructions, or engaging in logical reasoning. For example, calculating 38 × 19 mentally requires sustained working memory capacity.
Cogmed doesn’t just boost focus, concentration and problem-solving. Many parents also notice positive “side effects.” They often say their kids seem more mature, calmer and more grounded after the training. That’s because Cogmed trains frontal lobe connectivity¹ which helps with impulse control, managing worries, and building confidence.
Children can actually see themselves improving as they go through the program, which gives them even more motivation. In short, Cogmed helps kids think better, stay calmer, and feel more confident. The side effects are all good.

The central promise of Cogmed is the enhancement of working memory, which in turn supports improved focus and concentration across multiple domains, including both academic performance as well as sport. Cogmed is underpinned by a substantial body of research, with more than 130 studies published in high-quality academic journals worldwide, the majority originating from the United States. For a relatively recent innovation, such a volume of peer-reviewed evidence is unusually strong.
This reflects the fact that Cogmed did not emerge from a commercial initiative but from rigorous academic research. The program was developed by Professor Torkel Klingberg, a medical doctor and neuroscientist, who conducted controlled studies on working memory. At the time, the dominant assumption in neuroscience was that cognitive capacity was fixed. Prior to the widespread acceptance of neuroplasticity, Professor Klingberg demonstrated, through pre- and post-assessments, that participants undertaking working memory training exhibited significant improvements. This finding laid the foundation for Cogmed. Teaming up with an IT designer, he developed the program that’s now used in over 30 countries worldwide.
Early critiques suggested that training gains might not transfer to real-world functioning or that the improvements might be short-lived. However, subsequent research has effectively addressed these concerns, providing evidence that Cogmed delivers meaningful and durable benefits. Both students and adults worldwide have reported positive outcomes.
This is one of the most important questions to ask. Cogmed has been shown to significantly improve working memory, which is a core component of the ability to sustain attention, concentrate, and complete tasks. Research also shows that Cogmed can sometimes reduce anxiety, improve impulse control and strengthen other executive functioning skills. However, in considering its role in ADHD, it is critical to recognize that ADHD is not a unitary condition. There is no blood test or brain scan that can definitively diagnose ADHD.
Without significant behavioural issues, what is often referred to as ADHD can more accurately be understood as attentional difficulty – a challenge that may arise from many different causes. Because these underlying causes can vary widely, a thorough and comprehensive diagnostic process is essential. For example, a child with an auditory processing disorder may struggle to follow instructions or sustain attention simply because of difficulty hearing and interpreting information. While Cogmed can effectively strengthen working memory in such a child, the attentional difficulties linked to poor auditory processing would remain unless that specific issue is addressed. Similarly, other developmental, emotional, or environmental factors may contribute to attentional difficulties. Unfortunately, in many cases, assessment is limited to a brief interview followed by a prescription for stimulant medication. While medication can be helpful, this approach risks overlooking the root causes of the child’s challenges.
In summary, Cogmed trains working memory and, as a result, will improve focus and executive functioning. Yet for optimal outcomes, Cogmed should be considered within a broader, multi-factorial approach that seeks to understand and address the full range of factors contributing to attentional difficulties.
One big question about Cogmed training is: do the benefits stick, or do they fade once the training ends? Research shows that the improvements are not only real but also long-lasting.
Think of Cogmed as working in two phases. First comes the quick “skill-learning” phase, where children start to improve at the training exercises. This happens within the first few days. But the deeper impact is in the slower “brain-building” phase. Here, the brain actually strengthens its capacity for memory and focus, leading to changes that affect schoolwork, learning, and self-control¹.
Some of the most exciting findings come from long-term studies. For example, a large study in Germany² followed over 570 first graders. Half of the children did Cogmed for five weeks, while the others did not. Three years later, the Cogmed group was much more likely to be placed in the top academic track (termed “Gymnasium” in Germany), which leads to university. In fact, nearly half (46%) of them made it — a jump of 16 percentage points compared to the control group.
Other research shows similar results. Students who completed Cogmed scored significantly better on national math and reading tests years after the training. These benefits were directly linked to how much their working memory improved during the program.
The bottom line is that Cogmed is not just a short-term boost. It creates lasting improvements in memory and learning that can shape a child’s academic future for years to come.
The duration of Cogmed training depends on the schedule selected, and there are several options available. At its most intensive, the programme can be completed in five weeks, with five sessions per week. In this format, each session requires approximately 30 minutes of active training, during which eight exercises must be completed. Any breaks that are taken during training will increase the overall time..
At the other end of the spectrum, Cogmed can be spread out over a longer period by completing three sessions per week, each lasting about 15 minutes and comprising three exercises. This approach extends the total training period to approximately 13 weeks.
In clinical practice, the most commonly used and effective schedule is a six-week programme, with five sessions per week. Each session lasts around 20 minutes and involves five exercises. This option is both manageable and effective for most trainees.
Of course, life doesn’t always fit neatly into a plan. People get sick, have birthdays, go on weekends away, or simply miss a day here and there. That’s perfectly fine. Missing sessions won’t reduce the benefits of Cogmed; it just means the total training time might be extended slightly.
The key is to agree on a plan that feels realistic right from the start. A schedule that fits easily into your life helps you approach Cogmed in a relaxed, focused way—which is when the training works best.
The primary benefit of Cogmed training is enhanced focus and concentration, achieved through improvements in working memory. The cost of Cogmed is not standardized in this region. Since retail price maintenance is not legally permissible, practitioners are free to determine their own fees. Importantly, Cogmed is not delivered as a stand-alone digital program. It is always facilitated by a suitably qualified professional: either a registered healthcare practitioner or an individual with extensive experience in learner support within educational settings. This professional involvement is central to the success of the program and reflects the way Cogmed has been validated in over 130 published research studies internationally.
Participation in Cogmed includes consistent guidance and monitoring from the practitioner throughout the training period. Weekly meetings are held to track progress, address challenges and ensure that the program is effectively tailored to the trainee’s needs. This ongoing engagement provides invaluable insights into the individual’s cognitive functioning, often revealing strengths or challenges that may not have been previously identified.
Thus, when enrolling in Cogmed, one is not only purchasing access to the software but also engaging the services of a professional who can interpret and contextualize the trainee’s performance. Even resistance or difficulty with particular tasks provides clinically useful information when considered alongside other assessment data.
